Nigeria Solidarity was set up in response to the devastating anti-poor policies brought in by the Tinubu regime which have plunged millions into hunger and desperate multidimensional poverty. We are an international campaign supporting the movement in Nigeria that fights for the reversal of these policies and the transformation of Nigeria so that its vast resources are used for the benefit of the vast majority, not the greed of a corrupt few.
We first started after a UK speaking tour of socialist activists from Nigeria in January 2023. These meetings helped create a network that quickly mobilised in campaigns to prevent the deportations of Nigerians students who could no longer pay their university fees because of the sudden devaluation of the Naira. We were successful in forcing universities to back down and allow students to stay on.
As the crisis worsened, we helped support those organising action in Nigeria by organising international solidarity protests. Following the #EndBadGovernance protests in August 2023, activists including Michael Adaramoye Lenin and Mosiu Sodiq were abducted by the state and we campaigned for all protestors to be released and charges dropped.
A call was put out to spread this campaign around the world. There were protests at Nigerian embassies in Britain, Germany, Ireland and other countries. Throughout this campaigning we have organised several protests, meetings and discussions.
Around the world the Nigerian Diaspora responded to the courageous protest movement. Nigeria Solidarity has supported these protests from the start and continues to do so. We aim to build support and solidarity in every community, trade union and other areas.
Please join our campaign and help to build Nigeria Solidarity. Please consider making a regular donation via the crowdfunder to ensure that we have the resources to produce leaflets and to organise protests and meetings. This is essential to keep the plight of masses in Nigeria on the radar, and to make it clear that, while the UK government and other western governments have turned a blind eye, ordinary people – workers and young people, stand in solidarity and demand an end to their suffering.
